Re: How to make an antweight

these will fit onto a gearmotor with a d-shaped shaft.

if the botbitz have d shafts

I use these wheels. I drill their centre hole out to 3 mm and grind them down to a 20 mm diameter. Sometimes they require a little CA glue to keep them on.

Phil is right, servos aren't the best solution, but they are the cheapest. If you can afford the botbitz motors and controllers and the postage then definitely go for it. I know Marto is also manufacturing a kit which will be very reasonably priced.

But if you want cheap and cheerful, using servos you can probably make and antweight for less than £15.

Yeah the fact that the servo's were a cheap option looked good lol. I'm half way through building a new featherweight but the ant weights seem to have a really busy calender with loads of stuff I could get to.

Servos needn't be too slow - the TowerPro MG90s are easy to speed mod with some spacers, which increases the speed considerably to be on a par with some gearmotor driven robots.

They have nowhere near the power or torque or durability of the motors though - and as a pair of motors, mounts and wheels cost less than £40 I would reccommend them strongly if you're looking to be competitive (although with a big enough weapon, servo drive is doable!)

Ants do have a very busy calendar - there's three World Series a year and at least that number of other events, plus the fact they run at just about every heavyweight event too, I don't think any other weight class will get you more battles!

Yeah well that is what I thought. I work on a budget that's like a tenner here and a tenner there. I've started building Jeff the featherweight and my 3 yr old is loving it. It's really giving him something to get into so we have plans for a budget ant lol. Ie servo drives, receiver and battery (possibly a mixer), deodorant can wheels and a body made from cut up roses tins

Are you going to the AWS in Reading? It would be a great opportunity to see what ants are all about. Plus I'm sure plenty of people would let you have a poke about their robots and give some good advice.

I'm not sure when Reading is, I'll look into getting to some of the events. I'm going to the York Railway Museum as a casual spectator to get my bearings for the feather weight stuff.

AWS40 is on 23rd March at Reading University. If you're nearby come along and have a look, we're a friendly enough bunch.

Following the first circuit diagram, how can I attach the batteries (same type as shown in the images) to the receiver? Sorry for the silly question, but I really don't know how!! Any links to any wires or connectors that I need would be great! Thanks!

                          Hi,
I am completely new to this, but would love to get involved and build one. I was wondering if anyone was willing to add an update to this sticky with working links, a detailed part list and a simple photographic how to/wiring? Maybe just a build out of cardboard.

I don't want to pay for a kit, but then I don't know enough to get receivers and controls that would work together etc. Can anyone help me out? I could design a CAD frame easily enough, it is more the cheap internals for something like a flipper or horizontal blade ant I need help with.

Even something like this with the other parts needed would be helpful http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/thre...antweight-kits

Thank you. I see they have kits.
The controller side of things confuses me a little i.e. how do I buy/use controllers and crystals?
