  • Motors and speedos for Ants.

    Hi there!

After making an ant with modified servos which didn't really perform as i wanted I'm now nterested in making a new version of it with
a speedo and 2 geared motors.

I was thinking in line of the sabertooth 2x5RC as i have a 2x10RC in my FW im very satisfied with.
But im still oper for tips if there are any other good speedo's for a reasonable price.

Now to the motors. As I havn't made an ant with this kind of drive system im not sure what amount of torque and rpm on the shaft
i should be aiming for in round terms, perheps you could give me an answer?

The robot itself will be a lipo powered lifter i believe or a spinner if i can find a good motor for it.

    Regards / Danny

peter wallier makes a good speed controller for ants and he builds it onto your receiver if you want saving alot of weight) as for motors most people use micro metal gear motors, they're very good.

i'd recommend the 50:1 high power, i use them.

      Hi Danny,

I used the Sabertooth 2x5A for RC speed controller and 50:1 High Power gearmotors (like Jonny has suggested) in my first two antweights and it worked well.

Thanks alot for the quick and informative answers guys!
I'll be ordering a few of those and give it a go

Whilst im still typing. What specs / type of motors would you recommend for a spinner weapon?
        Brushless? Geared somehow?

          brushless. i used: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/1806n-2500kv- ... 05249.html
          and: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/hobbywing-10a ... 03317.html

i used this setup as it is very cheap there's probably better motors out there if you spend the money

I checked out the speed controlers Peter W makes and they look very interesting.
I couldn't find any price tag or any way to contact him, didn't say on his website as far as i can see.
Anyone able to help me with that?

I couldn't resist and ordered motors, wheels and a Sabertooth 2x5RC from Robotbits
I'd still like the contact info to Peter W for later use.

in my opinion there great but can they be wired up to 4 motors

Well I already have the 4 motors and ESC so they better

The motor controller you have is really only designed for driving two motors not four see:
                          http://www.antweightwars.co.uk/Controllers.htm

Well there great but will it blow up if I use 4 motors
                            thanks

If you are just driving around you might get away with it if you are useing the lower power motors but as soon as you get it to combat and there is a danger of stalling the motors the chances are they will blow. Each motor drive is 1.2A maximum and I would not recomend driving four motors.
