  • Wat does everybody think of....

..... direct drive from servo motors to wheels. It would be faster. Lighter with no gears or casing. If anybody has tried this please leave ur thoughts of this or anybody who has an opinion on this id like to hear from them. As im thinking about doing it.

It would be pathetic. You would not have enough torque to turn your wheel

lol, actually, i did try this ages ago when tinkering with standard JR servos and i blew the boards in them. I ened up U-tacking some round servo horns to the servo motor shafts 1:1. the whole little robot weighed around 80g, it was damn fast, uncontrollable, did sweet assed Full Body Spins and looked cool. But if it was a combat robot, it would get pushed around a fair bit. If you made it a Gold Digger style thwack bot, you might have a chance

This is beam robot technology. Very small wheels on the end of the output shafts. Very nippy, funky full body spinning, not as bad as ian makes out. 4 motors would probably work quite well.

I dont understand why youd want to use just standard servo motors when you can very easily speed hack these servos
That said the new anto uses the body of its motor as the wheel with the shaft bolted to the chassis

big ol boat servos might be a lot better, loads more torque.

horses for courses this, if you dont want power, dont buy powerful motors, if its, as someone said above, a full body spinner etc, servos might be a lightweight alternative. main problem Ive encountered was with my 1kg test machine a few years ago, it shears the servo head off quite easily, and the gears are mylon. you can get metal versions, and bigger servos, but be prepared for it not to work, though it can be made to.
