  • Real Robots Antweight Build Guide

    Hi all

Don't know if anyone can help... if anyone's on the robotwars101 forum too I'm also over there, I know someone posted in the featherweight forum there a link to a site where someone's uploaded the entire Rex's Robot Challenge series there. I believe two issues skipped that out in favour of Ian from the Chaos 2 team showing a step-by-step guide to build an antweight robot with a simple wedge card shell and flipping arm.

Does anybody happen to have these articles still and anyone think they're valid and a reasonable guide to use for building an ant that complies with the rules?

I think it'd be a massive help to other wannabe antweight roboteers!!

    Anybody got the articles?

    Cheers

    Luke

    Hi Luke

Assuming you're referring to http://rrc.dannysrobots.co.uk for the Rex's Robot Challenge issues, I only scanned in the first 37 issues as this covered everything needed to get a featherweight going. It also took a very long time to do so if I had done all the issues I'd probably still be scanning them in now!

I believe the antweight articles are around Issue 49 or something like that. I do have those issues and would be happy to scan copies of them for uploading but it would be a few weeks before I could get them as they're at home and I'm up at uni just now.

As for whether or not they are still relevant enough, I'd be best leaving that to the more experienced antweight builders. I do know that the ant Ian built used batteries of similar dimensions to AAA cells and it used off-the-shelf radio servos for drive, whereas a lot of ants today have proper geared drive motors, speed controllers and lithium battery technology. But I personally reckon the guide is still useful for making a competitive antweight.

      Hi Jamie

That's the exact guide I meant yes. I used to have all the RR magazines and 2 Cybots as well. One was my grandfather's but he couldn't be bothered with it anymore so I acquired another haha but sadly he hadn't built his right and had left it in a damp place so it kinda went a bit funny which is bad... the other, well dunno what happened to it and I was sure I'd kept hold of the magazines with those articles in!!

If you can scan them up for me that'd be awesome!

One thing about that article is I know it showed how to mod up servos for lifting arms...

Does anyone know anything about antweight scale pneumatics though? What about spinners... I know there's something about arenas not being suitable for heavyweight/featherweight spinners atm but what about ants?

Re: Real Robots Antweight Build Guide

Welcome to the forums Luke! (You might have vaguely encountered me at Reading - I had the yellow fleaweight spinner that wasn't doing much spinning)

Antweight spinners are very allowed as long as the arena battlebox is on, I've got two myself :P

Pneumatics are being used in one or two ants now, Anticide is probably the best - it uses a mixture of aircraft scale pneumatics and some breath freshener air tanks (!) and is good enough to be winning practically everything right now...danm Andy and his innovation :P

            Hi Luke,

Here are the scanned images of the Real Robots antweight articles. They're uploaded to my Photobucket account so they can also be accessed at:

Re: Real Robots Antweight Build Guide

              Hi all!

I'm new to the forum (and roboteering). I have always wanted to build my own bot, and am finally in position where I can give myself a budget.

I was searching the web for Rex Garrod's Robot Challenge when I came across this thread. i collected all the magazines when they first came out, but unfortunately they are back home in Ireland (and I currently live in London).

k_c_r's link http://rrc.dannysrobots.co.uk/ seems to be exactly what I am looking for, but unfortunately it is dead. I was wondering if anyone has a current link to these pages, or if k_c_r could possibly email them to me if he is no longer hosting them online?

              Many thanks,

              John

                    Hi John,

                    Ben beat me to it
But yeah, the main webpage hosting them has been down for a while now, and it's also been a while since I spoke to the guy hosting them so I don't know if that webpage will be back up at any point but they seem to be all right on the Photobucket page so I'll just leave that as the main source of them now, especially as they're too big for an email attachment.

So for clarification for anyone looking for these build guides, just direct them to the Photobucket link: http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c367/ ... 0articles/

Hope they're of use to you John
Also check out the Riobotz tutorial booklet (360-odd pages); a lot of information but very useful and more up-to-date than the Rex's Robot Challenge guides: http://www.riobotz.com.br/en/tutorial.html

Re: Real Robots Antweight Build Guide

Really appreciate the links guys. I'm going to have a thorough read-through of everything before I draw up a schematic (I have a rough idea of what I want to build).

Hopefully by this time next year I might be competing

                        Again, many thanks,

                        John
